DEVA Canoe Club was started in May 1999 for the canoe coaches in Chester who wanted a recreational group to allow them to get in touch with each other and organise trips down rivers, on the sea and open canoeing. The Club keeps in touch via a monthly Newsletter, E-Mail and this website.

At present the Club has around 100 members, of whom many are coaches, so it is easy for new members to get help and advice. The pool canoeing run at our local swimming pool, Northgate Arena, are organised and staffed by DEVA Canoe Club coaches, and this is a very good way for new members to get their skills developed in a safe and warm environment. These courses are booked directly with the Arena and are run from 9.00pm till 10.00pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The charge is £4 a session. Most of our new members come through the Northgate Arena sessions. Whilst DEVA Canoe Club is solely an adult club (minimum age for membership is 18), there is a Junior Club run by Chester Youth Services.  The junior club actually provides us with new members as the members grow up.

Club fees are £10 per annum, with an extra £5 for any additional family members, and the Club Year runs from 1st. June to 31st May. The fees cover administration costs and affiliation to the BCU, as well as providing equipment and courses.  Throughout the year we run a club session on a Thursday evening, based at the Riverside Centre, Chester and use the River Dee and the Weir from 6.00pm until the light fades, usually from mid-April to mid-September. We have some Club boats and equipment, including sea kayaks, which can be borrowed in order to be able to help people get started in the sport.
